How does knowledge become action?
Every year, researchers generate extraordinary discoveries. New insights improve our understanding of health, education, environmental systems, technology, organizations, and society. Yet many of these discoveries never reach the people who could benefit from them most. The challenge is rarely a lack of knowledge. More often, it is the difficulty of translating complex evidence into forms that people can understand, trust, and use.
My work explores how strategic communication can bridge that gap. I study how research moves beyond journals and conferences to inform public understanding, organizational practice, professional decision-making, and community action.
A Design Ecology Perspective
Knowledge does not travel unchanged.
Every time research moves from a laboratory to a classroom, from a journal article to a news story, from a technical report to a public meeting, or from scientific evidence to public policy, it passes through an ecosystem of people, technologies, institutions, and communication channels.
Each interaction shapes how that knowledge is interpreted. Questions are asked. Assumptions are made. Language changes. Visuals simplify—or sometimes oversimplify. Trust is strengthened or weakened. Understanding grows—or confusion spreads.
From a Design Ecology perspective, research translation is not simply about making science easier to understand. It is about designing communication systems that preserve meaning while making knowledge more useful.

Beyond Dissemination
Research translation is often treated as the final stage of a project. Publish the paper. Present the findings. Write a summary.
Move on.
I believe this view is too limited. Translation is not simply dissemination. It is a collaborative process of interpretation, adaptation, dialogue, and application. Communities contribute local knowledge. Practitioners identify real-world constraints. Decision-makers balance competing priorities.
Researchers refine questions based on what they learn through implementation. Knowledge does not simply move outward. It evolves through use.

From Discovery to Decision
Throughout my career, I have worked across higher education, applied research, entrepreneurship, nonprofit organizations, and community partnerships. Those experiences have reinforced a simple observation:
The most valuable research is not necessarily the most technically sophisticated.
It is the research that changes how people understand problems, make decisions, and improve the systems in which they live and work. Helping knowledge move from discovery to application requires more than effective writing. It requires listening, collaboration, design, and a deep understanding of the people who will ultimately use that knowledge.
