Why do some communities, organizations, and institutions adapt while others struggle?
Every community will experience disruption.
Natural disasters. Public health emergencies. Economic shocks. Technological change. Political uncertainty. Organizational transitions.
The question is rarely whether disruption will occur.
The more important question is what happens next.
Why do some communities recover stronger than before, while others remain vulnerable? Why do some organizations learn from disruption, while others repeat the same mistakes? Why do some institutions adapt to changing conditions, while others become increasingly fragile?
These questions sit at the center of my research.
I study how communication, design, leadership, and institutional relationships influence the adaptive capacity of complex human systems.
A Design Ecology Perspective
Resilience is often described as the ability to withstand disruption. While that definition is useful, I believe it tells only part of the story. Communities do not become resilient simply because they possess stronger infrastructure or more resources. They become resilient because they develop the capacity to learn, coordinate, innovate, and adapt.
Roads, buildings, and technology matter.
But so do trust.
Relationships.
Information flows.
Institutional memory.
Leadership.
Shared understanding.
From a Design Ecology perspective, resilience emerges from the interaction of these elements rather than from any one component alone.
The systems we design today shape how effectively people will adapt tomorrow.
Research Themes
My work explores questions such as:
- What enables communities to adapt under conditions of uncertainty?
- How does trust influence collective action during crises?
- How do organizations learn from disruption?
- What role does communication play in disaster preparedness and recovery?
- How do social, technological, and ecological systems influence one another?
- Which design decisions strengthen long-term adaptive capacity?
- How can institutions balance efficiency with resilience?
- What allows interdisciplinary teams to coordinate effectively during complex challenges?
These questions draw upon strategic communication, systems thinking, public administration, environmental communication, organizational leadership, human-centered design, and Design Ecology.
Beyond Infrastructure
Much of resilience planning focuses on physical infrastructure.
Stronger bridges.
More resilient electrical systems.
Improved emergency response capabilities.
These investments are essential.
Yet communities with similar infrastructure often experience dramatically different outcomes following the same disruption.
The difference frequently lies within the less visible systems.
How quickly does information move?
Who trusts whom?
Can organizations coordinate across traditional boundaries?
Do residents know where to find reliable information?
Does leadership encourage collaboration before a crisis occurs?
These forms of human infrastructure are often the difference between merely surviving disruption and adapting through it.
Adaptive Capacity
One concept that increasingly shapes my work is adaptive capacity. Adaptive capacity is the ability of individuals, organizations, and communities to learn, reorganize, and respond effectively as conditions change. Unlike resilience, which often describes an outcome, adaptive capacity emphasizes the ongoing processes that make resilience possible.
It grows through:
- Strong relationships
- Trusted communication
- Effective institutions
- Shared learning
- Flexible leadership
- Accessible knowledge
- Inclusive participation
- Continuous improvement
These qualities cannot be built overnight during an emergency.
They must be cultivated long before disruption occurs.
Why This Matters
The challenges facing communities today are becoming more interconnected.
Climate hazards affect public health.
Public health influences economic stability.
Technology shapes social trust.
Food systems influence environmental resilience.
Education affects workforce adaptability.
No single organization can solve these challenges alone. Success increasingly depends on how effectively people, institutions, and communities communicate, collaborate, and learn together. Resilience therefore becomes less about resisting change and more about navigating it wisely.

It requires strengthening the systems that enable people to learn, collaborate, and adapt.
My research seeks to understand how communication, design, and institutional relationships can help communities move beyond simply recovering from disruption toward becoming more capable of thriving amid change.
Ultimately, I believe resilience is not something we build once.
It is something we continuously cultivate through the ways we design our systems, strengthen our relationships, and learn together.
