Pursuing the invisible

Most of us notice problems only after they become visible. We notice flooded roads after the storm has passed, declining trust after relationships have already begun to fracture, communication failures after confusion spreads, and disease after people become sick. By the time we recognize many of society’s most significant challenges, the underlying processes have often been unfolding for days, months, or even years.

That observation has become one of the central motivations behind my research. I am increasingly convinced that many of the systems influencing our lives operate quietly, beneath the level of everyday awareness. Information flows through organizations without attracting attention. People move through designed environments following routines they rarely think about. Objects are picked up, shared, and returned. Technologies subtly shape decisions. Most of these interactions appear insignificant when viewed individually. Together, however, they create patterns that influence health, communication, trust, learning, and resilience.

One of the ideas emerging through my work in Design Ecology is that everyday actions are rarely isolated. Every interaction changes the conditions for future interactions. Every design decision alters the environments in which people make decisions. Every communication shapes what people expect next. Over time, these seemingly ordinary events accumulate into systems that either strengthen our ability to adapt or increase our vulnerability to disruption.

This perspective shifts our attention away from isolated incidents and toward the relationships that connect them. Much of modern problem-solving is organized around responding to events. A crisis occurs, an investigation begins, recommendations are written, and policies change. Those responses are often necessary, but they are also reactive. An ecological perspective asks a different question. Instead of asking, “What happened?” it asks, “What pattern made this outcome possible?”

That subtle shift changes how we investigate problems. It encourages us to examine routines instead of exceptions, relationships instead of isolated actions, and processes instead of individual failures. Rather than searching for a single cause, we begin looking for the conditions that allowed an outcome to emerge.

This is one reason I continue returning to design as both a research method and a practical way of thinking. Good design helps us perceive relationships that would otherwise remain hidden. Maps reveal transportation systems. Diagrams reveal organizational structures. Interfaces reveal information flows. Thoughtful visualizations allow us to understand complexity without reducing it to oversimplified explanations. In many ways, design becomes a tool for making invisible systems visible.

Whether we are studying communication, environmental health, organizational resilience, or technological change, the same principle often applies: the most effective interventions begin with better observation. Before we redesign a system, we must first understand how it actually functions. Before we communicate solutions, we must recognize the interactions that produced the problem. Before we improve resilience, we must identify the relationships that make adaptation possible.

The invisible deserves our attention not because it is mysterious, but because it often shapes the visible world in ways we rarely appreciate. Perhaps that is one of the most valuable roles of research—not simply answering questions, but helping us ask better ones.
